Dementia-friendly theatre company Vamos will bring Finding Joy to The Other Place in November, as we aim to make theatre more accessible to those with dementia and other disabilities.
Finding Joy, the award-winning production from dementia-friendly theatre company Vamos, comes to The Other Place on 9-10 November.
The play tells the true story of an 18-year-old boy who looks after his grandmother Joy as she experiences middle- and late-stage dementia. This wordless and highly visual show is also fully accessible to d/Deaf audiences without the need of a signer.
Ahead of these shows, Vamos bring their alternate production, Sharing Joy, to The Other Place this summer. The special invite-only performance is designed specifically for people living with dementia and will take place on 29 July.
These plays form part of our wider initiative to make theatre more accessible, including the training of 150 staff as Dementia Friends this year. The staff will learn about the condition and how to help those affected, allowing them to provide support to people living with dementia during these performances and year-round. Keep an eye out for their blue Dementia Friends badges as you go around our theatres.
We also have three chilled performances this year, ideal for people living with dementia:
A chilled performance takes a more casual approach to noise and movement in the auditorium, but the performance itself is completely unchanged. These performances welcome everyone and are particularly ideal for people who feel more at ease knowing they can go in and out of the auditorium during the show.
Visitors living with disabilities can get more information about access at our theatres with the DisabledGo website's Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick Accessibility Checker, which launches today (5 July) at The Other Place. Their site collects information on a range of accessibility issues at venues around the country so that people with disabilities can plan their travels confidently, and includes our theatre buildings alongside other local landmarks.
