Is it possible to find your way to a "zone of agreement"? Find out from panelists with experience of negotiating in government and the arts.

Panelists will tease out the theme of reconciliation, negotiation and diplomacy in the context of our current 'golden age of disagreement'. Discussion will ask how deeply fragmented opinions can be reconciled, whether we find agreement more difficult to come by today and what we can learn from the miraculous moment when the world came together in Kyoto. 

How do we find our way to a 'zone of agreement' (a key concept explored in the play Kyoto) in any argument - have we lost some of this ability in 2024 - and if so, how can we get it back?

Stephen Kunken

Stephen is an actor who currently stars in Kyoto as Don Pearlman: oil lobbyist and serial sower of disagreement.

Stephen's Theatre credits include: Enron (Broadhurst Theater), The Columnist (Samuel J. Friedman Theatre), High (The Booth Theater), Rock’ n’ Roll (Bernard Jacobs Theater), Frost/Nixon (Bernard Jacobs Theater), Festen (Music Box Theater), Proof (Walter Kerr Theatre).

Baroness Ashton

Baroness Cathy Ashton - As the EU's first High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security (2009-14), Baroness Ashton has negotiated in crisis situations from Kosovo to Kyiv and is an expert in 21st Century diplomacy. Her book "And then what?" takes readers behind closed doors in some of the most tense and high stakes political negotiations of our time.

Catherine Margaret Ashton, Baroness Ashton of Upholland, LG, GCMG, PC is a politician in the British Labour party. She is the current Chancellor of the University of Warwick. Her previous roles in office include; High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, First Vice President of the European Commission, Leader of the House of Lords and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Education and Skills.

Charles Clover - Panel Chair

Environmental journalist who reported from COP3 in Kyoto. 

Charles made his name as an author and environmental journalist writing principally for The Sunday Times and the Telegraph for which he was Environment Editor for 22 years. His book The End of The Line (2004) and the award-winning documentary film that it inspired (2009) raised overfishing as a global problem and led to the foundation of Blue Marine Foundation which he ran for 13 years and still works for as a senior adviser. His latest book, Rewilding the Sea (2022), catalogues the reasons for hope in marine conservation and shows how damage can be reversed. Before taking a full-time interest in the ocean, he was the author, with HRH the Prince of Wales, of Highgrove: Portrait of an Estate (1993).  

Ashleigh Nugent

Ashleigh Nugent’s debut novel, LOCKS, was published by Picador Books in 2023 to rave reviews including 4 stars in The Telegraph. LOCKS recently secured a TV deal with 2LE Media. 

Ashleigh has also written for theatres, academic journals, poetry anthologies and magazines. Ashleigh was Liverpool City Region’s Artist of the Year in 2021. He is also course director at RiseUp, where he uses his own life experience and mindset expertise to support prisoners.
