Find your inspiration

Make your own crown. Kings, Queens and crowns are featured throughout Shakespeare's plays, whether you're talking the King and Queen of the Fairies in A Midsummer Night's Dream or one of the heavyweights of the British dynasty.

Feeling inspired by the spring bloom? Look to the colours you see around you and summer clothes for costume ideas. Many costume designers choose fabrics rich with flowers, foliage and colour to set scenes in the natural world.

This dress, now in our museum collection, was first worn by Actor Nina Sosanya as Rosaline in the 2008 production of Love’s Labour’s Lost, designed by Katrina Lindsay.

Enjoying more time with your pet animals? You could find a way to feature them in your creation. Perhaps make a mask or puppet from paper-mache or draw them into a Shakespeare inspired story.

Animals often feature on our stages. This furry donkey mask was made to look exactly like a real-life donkey that Director Gregory Doran saw in North Wales from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, 2008.

Perform a Shakespearean soliloquy in a statement outfit, a la 2016 Paapa Essiedu in Simon Godwin’s Hamlet, echoing the vibrancy of 20th century artist Basquiat.

This vibrant pattern was screen printed onto a plain white t-shirt for a 1976 production of The Comedy of Errors.

Over the years, costume tricks have transformed old garments into new pieces for the stage. Can you use materials around you to recycle an unwanted item? This leather vest was turned into a breastplate by adding foil circles painted to look like rusty metal.
