We've teamed up with New York-based immersive game producer iNK Stories to develop our first ever video game, a trailblazing vision set in contemporary Iran with Shakespeare’s Lady Macbeth at the centre.
The game Lili will see Macbeth’s witches reimagined as hackers, with surveillance cameras and cyber-infiltration putting the player at the heart of the story and giving them a unique perspective into the world of the play.
This modern twist on the Macbeth story explores technological domination, the manipulation of information, and institutional violence, reflecting the dark realities of inequities in our digital age.
It stars actor Zar Amir (Cannes Best Actress winner) as Lady Macbeth (Lili), drawing on her lived experience as an Iranian woman in exile who has courageously confronted her own battles against authoritarian gendered oppression.
Lili will plunge you into a stylized vision of modern Iran, where surveillance and authoritarianism are part of daily life. The gameplay will feature a blend of live-action cinema within an interactive game format, so you can immerse yourself in the world of Lady Macbeth and make choices that influence her destiny.
To create Lili, part of our immersive and digital innovation work, we brought in Professor Emma Smith, RSC Board Member and leading Shakespeare academic to work alongside iNK Stories to develop the text for the game.
Co-produced by Paris-based Alambic Production, Lili is now in development and slated to enter production in late 2025 with the final release accessible across gaming platforms.
