A group of undergraduate and postgraduate students from the University of Birmingham experienced a week of practical workshops and discovery about making theatre.
The students worked alongside academics from the University and the Shakespeare Institute, as well as members of the creative team from our current production of King John.
The week kicked off with a workshop exploring the process of interpreting a historic play for today’s audiences led by King John director, Eleanor Rhode. The students also gained an insight into the process of staging an RSC production through sessions with the show's designer, Max Johns, writing and vocal skills workshops and an introduction to movement with Movement Director, Tom Jackson Greaves.
A session on Shakespeare and Heritage looked at how merchandise and souvenirs are designed, what sells and who it appeals to and the students saw a matinee performance of King John.
The week was part of our five-year collaboration with the University of Birmingham which aims to develop The Other Place as a unique hub for rehearsal, training, learning and creativity.
The project which led the reinstatement of our Studio Theatre at The Other Place in 2016, gives students access to creative and teaching spaces at The Other Place as well as the expertise of RSC artists, practitioners and the opportunity to attend our productions and events.
