If you pass our building today you will see it wrapped in pink hazard tape reading ‘Missing Live Theatre’.
Our building is the latest of a series up and down the country to have been wrapped by theatre designers, to bring colour to venues that are usually busy and full of life, but now stand empty.
The hazard tape was developed by the Scene/Change community of designers and the installation on our building is designed by RSC Associate Artist Tom Piper, who has designed many of our productions, including the upcoming The Winter’s Tale, which has been postponed due to Covid-19.
Tom Piper said: "The taping of venues across the country has been designed and coordinated by Scene/Change to highlight the fact that, although there has been a rescue package put forward, we still have no dates on the road map for reopening.
"The buildings will remain shut ‘missing live theatre’ for the foreseeable future. The idea for the tape came initially from seeing theatres taped off as if they were somehow toxic, we wanted to subvert that idea and create bold striking installations that celebrate the buildings and remind us of how much we want to be back inside them with our audiences creating work to share together in the same communal space."
